Photography is all about capturing the perfect shot, but editing is where the magic really happens. In this breakdown, I’ll show you exactly how I transformed a flat RAW image into a polished final edit for Peugeot. Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Starting with the RAW Image

The RAW file is always the foundation of any great edit. Straight out of the camera, it can look dull and lifeless, but that’s completely normal! The goal is to bring out the details, balance the exposure, and enhance the mood of the shot.

Step 2: Basic Adjustments in Lightroom

Before making selective edits, I always start with basic global adjustments. This step sets the overall tone and balance of the image before refining smaller details.

  • Edits Applied:

    • Adjusted exposure slightly to ensure proper brightness.

    • Fine-tuned highlights and shadows to maintain dynamic range.

    • Added a bit of clarity and vibrance to enhance textures.

Step 3: Enhancing the Scene with Gradients

Gradients help control the lighting and direct focus to the subject. I used a combination of linear and radial gradientsto guide the viewer’s eye.

  • Linear Gradient: Darkened the foreground slightly to draw attention to the car.

  • Radial Gradient: Brightened the center to subtly enhance the subject.

Step 4: Selective Adjustments – Glass, Subject & Wheels

To refine the image, I focused on three key areas:

  • Glass Adjustments: Reduced reflections to keep the background from being distracting.

  • Subject Adjustments: Adjusted brightness and contrast on the car to make it pop.

  • Wheel Adjustments: Enhanced details and contrast to bring out the textures.

Step 5: Final Touches in Photoshop

Once I was happy with the Lightroom edit, I took the image into Photoshop for final refinements:

  • Removed small distractions in the background.

Final Result

After all these steps, here’s the final edit! The goal was to maintain a clean, professional look while ensuring the car remained the focal point of the image.

Closing Thoughts

That’s my full editing process for this shot! I hope this breakdown gives you insight into how I approach car photography edits.
